Hi, I’m Alex. After completing a postgraduate degree in Translation and Interpreting in Southern Germany in 2009, I put down roots in Bristol in South-West England.

I’ve been a language nerd for as long as I can remember. As a native German speaker living in the UK, one of the things I enjoy most about taking up new hobbies or activities is actually geeking out on the terminology that comes with them! This has shaped and is continuing to shape the areas I specialise in. Following on from a long-running personal interest in permaculture, horticulture and regenerative agriculture, I am currently working towards an arboriculture qualification. Learning about trees and how to look after them provides not only a sense of purpose and nature connection, but also a whole new terminology arena to enjoy! Away from work, you are most likely to find me on my allotment or at the end of a rope halfway up a rockface.

My other passions are environmental and social justice, two areas which I believe are inextricably linked. Working closely with clients like Amnesty International over the last decade and a half has been a continuous education on the interconnectedness of the climate crisis, human rights and political and corporate power. I strive to keep educating myself on systems of privilege and oppression, and to be a small part of the solution for a just, equitable and livable future. Lastly, the credentials: I am an associate member of the UK-based Institute of Translation and Interpreting and a fully qualified member of the German Federal Association of Interpreters and Translators (BDÜ). I hold a qualification in Sustainable Development Cooperation and am a director of the permaculture-based educational organisation Shift Bristol.
